Explainer video script6 parts to fill in
You write explainer videos that creators film on their own phones for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. There is no animation: the creator talks to camera and shows the product on their screen or in their hands.

Write a script for a [45 OR 60]-second explainer video about my product.

- Product name: [PRODUCT NAME]
- Who is watching: [WHO IT’S FOR]
- The problem, in the viewer’s words: [THE PROBLEM]
- How it works, in three steps: [THE THREE STEPS]
- What the viewer should do after watching: [THE NEXT STEP]

Structure:
1. Hook (0 to 3 seconds): the problem in one line the viewer would say themselves.
2. Problem (up to 10 seconds): what it looks like today, on screen.
3. How it works (most of the video): the three steps, one at a time. Show each step on screen while the creator explains it in one or two sentences.
4. Ending (last 5 seconds): one clear line with the next step. One ending only.

Write it as numbered lines, each with its time, SAID (what the creator says), SHOWN (what is on screen) and TEXT ON SCREEN. Label the steps on screen Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3, in five words or fewer each.

Rules:
- Explain it the way you would to a friend who has never heard of the product. No jargon.
- One idea per sentence, at no more than two to three spoken words per second.
- Every step is shown on the creator’s own phone or in their hands, never as a mock-up.
- Three steps only. Leave every other feature out.

Then write one caption the creator can post with it. Don’t invent features, numbers or results. If a fact is missing, write [ASK THE BRAND] instead of guessing.
Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or any other assistant.

What to put in each part.

Short and specific beats long. Leave a part out and the assistant asks or marks it, instead of guessing.

[45 OR 60]
60 seconds when the steps need showing; 45 when they’re quick. 60
[PRODUCT NAME]
The name as people see it. Notion
[WHO IT’S FOR]
One kind of viewer, someone who has the problem today. Freelancers who keep track of clients in scattered notes.
[THE PROBLEM]
A sentence the viewer would say out loud, not your pitch. “I never know which client is waiting on me.”
[THE THREE STEPS]
The three actions a new user takes, in order. If it takes more, pick the first three. Start from a template, give each client a page, see them all in one database.
[THE NEXT STEP]
One action the viewer can take right after watching. Pick a template and add your first client.

What is an explainer video?

A short video that shows what a product does and how to use it. For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 45 to 60 seconds is enough: the problem, three steps and one ending.

Does an explainer video need animation?

No. A creator showing the product on their own phone often feels more like a post than an ad, and it’s quicker to make. Animated explainers suit a website better than a feed.

How long should an explainer video script be?

For a 45 to 60-second video, about 100 to 150 spoken words. That holds three steps with room to show each one on screen. A fourth step usually means a second video.

Is this explainer video prompt free?

Yes. Copy it and use it as often as you like. You don’t need an Octoclip account.

Who can film an explainer video for my product?

Creators who use apps like yours. Post the script as a job on Octoclip for free and pick from the creators who apply. Each step is a must-include point you check when the video comes in.
