01In short

What is a UGC creator?

A UGC creator is a person who films short videos about a brand’s product in the style of a real customer, such as a demo, an unboxing or an honest review. The brand pays for the video and uses it in its ads and on its own accounts, so the creator does not need a large following.

02The guide

How to find and hire UGC creators.

Five steps, from the brief to the creators you hire again.

  1. Decide what the video is for

A video for your ads needs a strong first three seconds. A video for your own page can take longer to explain. Say which one in the brief.

  2. Write one brief for every creator

List the points every video must show and what to avoid, and leave the words to the creator. The UGC examples page has formats to start from.

Anatomy of a UGC ad brief

Five parts a creator can film from.

    1. 1
One momentThe single thing the ad shows, clear in ten seconds.
    2. 2
The opening lineHow the video starts. The rest of the wording is the creator’s.
    3. 3
Must-include pointsWhat has to be on screen. Each video is checked against them.
    4. 4
What to avoidAnything the video must not show or say.
    5. 5
Price per videoYou set it, and creators see it before they apply.
An example brief for an app install ad. On Octoclip every job has a price per video and at least two must-include points.
  3. Set a fixed price per video

Creators see the price before they apply, so the ones who apply have accepted it. The UGC rates guide explains what moves the price.

  4. Choose from the creators who apply

Look at each applicant’s recent videos and record of videos delivered on time. Followers matter only if the creator posts on their own account.

  5. Hire several, then hire the best again

Five creators on the same brief give you five openings to test. Send your next job’s offer to the creators whose videos worked.

03Two ways to work

What UGC creators make: posts or video files.

Each job is one type. You set the price per video, and creators see it before they apply.

08Avoid these

Four mistakes when hiring UGC creators.

  • Choosing by follower count

For UGC videos the brand posts the file, so followers say nothing about the video. Look at recent work and delivery record instead.

  • Writing the script for them

A creator reading your words sounds like an ad. Give the must-include points and let the creator say it their way.

  • Leaving the rights unclear

Agree where the video can run before anyone films. See the UGC contract template.

  • Hiring one creator and stopping

One video tells you little. Several creators on one brief show you which opening to repeat.

Talk to us
What does a UGC creator do?

A UGC creator films short videos for brands in the style of a real customer: demos, unboxings, first tries and reviews. The brand runs the video in its ads or posts it on its own accounts. Some UGC creators also publish on their own accounts as a creator post.

Where can I find UGC creators?

On a UGC marketplace like Octoclip, you post one job and UGC creators apply, so you choose from people who already want the job at your price. You can also search social apps and message creators yourself, which takes longer. See find influencers for both ways.

How much do UGC creators charge?

UGC creators set their own rates, depending on the video’s length, the usage rights, extras such as raw footage, and their experience. On Octoclip you set a fixed price per video before creators apply. The UGC rates guide covers what moves the price.

Do UGC creators need followers?

No, not for UGC videos. The brand posts the file on its own accounts and ads, so the creator’s audience does not matter. For creator posts, which go on the creator’s own account, followers do matter and you can set a minimum.

What is the difference between a UGC creator and an influencer?

An influencer is paid to post to their own audience. A UGC creator is paid for the video itself, which the brand uses. See UGC vs influencer marketing for when to use each.

Can I use UGC creators’ videos in ads?

Yes. The contract both sides accept lets you use approved content in paid ads, including Spark Ads and partnership ads. Ask for the ad code or approval in your brief so the creator knows before they apply.

How much does it cost to hire on Octoclip?

Posting a job, reviewing applicants and sending offers are free. You set a fixed price per video and pay only when a creator accepts your offer. The full amount is shown before you send the offer.

Is Octoclip an agency?

No. You choose and hire creators directly. Octoclip runs the jobs, contracts, approvals and payments in between.

Will UGC creators get me more sales?

Nobody can promise that for your product. Octoclip does not sell or guarantee downloads, installs or views. You pay a fixed price for each approved video.

What if a video doesn’t follow the brief?

You can ask for one revision per video, pointing to the must-include point it missed. The creator has 3 days to resubmit. If you don’t review a video within 5 days, it is approved.

When is a UGC creator paid?

Their payment is secured when they accept, before any work starts, and released for each video you approve.
