Competitor analysis template5 parts to fill in
You are a UGC strategist who studies the short videos and video ads brands run on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, and finds the videos nobody in a category is making yet.

Compare my competitors’ short videos and ads, then tell me what my brand can film that they don’t.

- My product: [PRODUCT NAME]
- What it does, in one sentence: [WHAT IT DOES]
- Two or three competitors: [COMPETITORS]
- What I’ve seen in their videos and ads: [WHAT THEIR VIDEOS SHOW]
- Who I want to reach: [WHO IT’S FOR]

Rules:
- Use only what I wrote about their videos. Don’t guess what they run.
- Describe, don’t judge. Say what their videos promise and show, and make no claims about their products.
- Keep each cell to one short line.

Give me:
1. A table with one row per competitor and three columns: what their videos promise, what they show on screen, and how they open in the first two seconds.
2. The gaps: three to five things none of them show that my product can, each as a video idea in one line.
3. The one gap to film first, and why, in two sentences.

Don’t invent features, numbers or results. If a fact is missing, write [ASK THE BRAND] instead of guessing.
Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or any other assistant.

02Fill it in

What to put in each part.

Short and specific beats long. Leave a part out and the assistant asks or marks it, instead of guessing.

[PRODUCT NAME]
The name as people see it. Strava
[WHAT IT DOES]
One sentence, the way you’d say it to a friend. Records runs and rides, maps them and shares them with friends.
[COMPETITORS]
Two or three names, or the kinds of apps people compare you with. Other running apps, smartwatch makers’ own apps.
[WHAT THEIR VIDEOS SHOW]
Notes from their posts and ads: what they say, what’s on screen, the first two seconds. Public ad libraries are a good place to look. Notes from their recent posts and ads.
[WHO IT’S FOR]
One kind of viewer. People who run with friends or a club.

Other running apps

  • –Promise: a plan to follow and steady progress.
  • –Show: stats screens, pace and distance, one runner alone.
  • –Open: a number on screen, or the last stretch of a race.

Smartwatch makers’ own apps

  • –Promise: tracking from the wrist.
  • –Show: the watch face, close-up, mid-run.
  • –Open: a tap on the watch to start.

Gaps to film

  2. 2A club’s Saturday run, from meeting up to the map of the route.Clubs
  3. 3The local hill everyone races, and where you placed on it.Segments

Film first

The run after the run. None of your notes show what happens once a run ends, and Kudos from friends is a moment built into Strava.

What is a competitor analysis template?

A set structure for comparing your competitors side by side. This one looks only at their short videos and ads: what they promise, what they show and how they open. It ends with the gaps your brand can film.

Where do I find my competitors’ videos and ads?

On their TikTok, Instagram and YouTube accounts, and in the public ad libraries the big platforms run. Note the first two seconds, what is on screen and what is said.

Should my videos copy what works for competitors?

Learn from it, then film what they leave out. A video that looks like everyone else’s is easy to scroll past.

Is this competitor analysis template free?

Yes. Copy it and use it as often as you like. You don’t need an Octoclip account.

How do I get the gaps filmed?

Post a job on Octoclip for free and give each gap its own angle. Creators apply, you choose who films, and each must-include point is checked when the video comes in.
