In short
What is engagement rate?
Engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacts with a post. Add the likes, comments and shares, divide by the creator’s followers and multiply by 100. On TikTok and Reels, where most viewers are not followers, dividing by views is often the fairer measure. Brands use it to judge how attentive a creator’s audience is.
A marketplace where brands hire creators directly, at a fixed price per video, and see each creator’s connected account first.

How to read it
How to calculate engagement rate, and how to read it.
Five steps for judging a creator before you hire them.
- 01
Take several posts, not one
One viral post or one flop distorts the picture. Average the creator’s last ten.
- 02
By followers
(Likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100. The classic measure, and the one most people mean.
- 03
By views
(Likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. Better for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, where a video is shown far beyond the creator’s followers.
- 04
Compare creators of the same size
Smaller accounts often have higher rates than large ones. Set a creator against others with a similar following. More on small accounts in micro influencers.
- 05
Then watch the videos
A rate tells you people react, not why. Read the comments and watch the last few videos before you decide.

FAQ
Engagement rate, answered.
What people ask about these numbers, and how Octoclip prices a video.
What is the engagement rate formula?
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100. To measure by views, divide by views instead of followers.
What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the size of the account, and smaller creators usually score higher. Compare a creator with others of a similar size on the same platform.
How do I calculate engagement rate on Instagram?
Add the likes and comments on a post, divide by the account’s followers and multiply by 100. For Reels, also work it out by views.
How do I calculate engagement rate on TikTok?
Add likes, comments and shares, then divide by views and multiply by 100. Views matter more than followers on TikTok because most viewers are not followers.
Do followers matter when I hire a creator?
For creator posts, yes, and you can set a minimum on the job. For UGC videos, which you publish yourself, only the video matters. See how to find influencers.
Does a high engagement rate mean more sales?
It shows an audience that pays attention, which is why brands look at it. Octoclip does not sell or guarantee downloads, installs or views. You pay a fixed price for each approved video.
